Can I hook up a 12 volt fan to a 12 volt landscape transformer?

May 18th, 2012 · Landscape Lighting

Question by fonzarelli_1999: Can I hook up a 12 volt fan to a 12 volt landscape transformer?
Here’s my situation. I have an outdoor bar area with two built in refrigerators. There is plenty of air space behind them, but it can get hot in the summer time and I want to protect them from overheating. I’m going to put in a vent to the outside on the back of the bar area and I want to install a fan to pull hot air out.

I also have a 12 volt landscape lighting transformer under the counter area running a couple of bar lights. Can I purchase a 12 volt fan and run it directly off the landscape transformer, possibly putting a thermostat control in line so it kicks the fan on and off as needed?

Best answer:

Answer by GARY G
This seems reasonable as the fan and the lights will not be running at the same time , make sure you do not exceed the transformer rating

What You Should Know Before You Install Landscape Lighting Features

What You Should Know Before You Install Landscape Lighting Features

Article by Shakeel Ahmed

The installation of landscape lighting features is not a hard task to achieve. However, you need to understand the purpose of landscape lighting features. When are these lights used? You can use landscape lights when you have to brighten a region located at a certain height. These lights are not used to brighten the floor. An example can be the shrubs and small-sized trees in the garden. This is when you need the lights to be located at a certain height so that the light can reach the desired distance. Hence, the right height is the first thing, which you should look at.

When it comes to the installation of these features, you need to ensure that some kind of protection is there. For instance, these lights are mainly installed in gardens, yards or near swimming pools. Let us take the example of the garden. During the night hours, a lot of dew is expected to fall. Hence, the light has to be protected in every manner. Usually, landscape lights are covered completely with waterproof and moisture proof plastic. Thus, they are not harmed in any manner. However, if the light is exposed directly to moisture and water, it may not last for long.

These lights are always installed with a stand. This is a very important aspect of installation and you need to concentrate on the length of the stand. It would depend on the distance until which the light has to be thrown. In other words, you need to decide vertical level for the light. For instance, you want it to go until 4 feet; you need to use a stand appropriately. The weight of the stand also has to be adjusted according to the base of the. For instance, if the landscape lights are installed in the garden on mud, a very heavy weighted stand cannot be used. This is because the balance would be spoilt.

These days, landscape lights are very much in fashion. They are used for both corporate and personal purposes. You will see these lights in both houses and offices. The lights are used with a number of shapes including round, square and rectangular. When you are installing these lights, you need to screw the stand to the floor firmly. In addition to that, you should use screws instead of nails. This would help you in relocating the light when it is required.

12 volt lighting for Home?

May 14th, 2012 · Landscape Lighting

6576569699 c704243161 m 12 volt lighting for Home?
by Garett Gabriel

Question by Buck: 12 volt lighting for Home?
Just thinking thing over. Want to install a 120 volt AC to12 volt DC converter, as the ones found in most RV’s. The 12 volt would be used power 12 volt light fixtures as one found in RV’s, and Marine crafts. The 12 volts could be used with a solar panel. The solar panel would be used to charge a 12 volt battery(s), and the 12 volt battery could be used to power the lights during the night.

I thought of using resistors for each light within the low voltage lighting electrical wires to control even distribution of lighting.

The 12 volt distribution panel http://www.bestconverter.com/assets/imag… can as a battery charger when needed. This panel is rated a 50 amps.

A few more 12 volt recessed lights http://www.swego.com/12_volt_recessed.ht… mostly rated at 10 watts and these are xenon lights.

The electrical lines would be anywhere from 10 feet to the longest run of 70 feet. The electrical wire would be 12/2 CL2 rated for low voltage wires.

The 12 volt distribution panel will power the lights and can be used to charge a 12 volt battery when needed.

I would then add a toggle switch to shut of power to solar panel when not in use.

The reason I choose the 12 volt distribution panel because this system had the built in led lights for the blown fuse detection and the fuses are a safety feature in case things go bad with lights or 12 volt fixtures.

There for twelve of the 10 watt recessed lights will add up to 120 watts. 120 watts divided by 12 volts will equal to 10 amps. This would still leave 40 amps for landscape light or other 12 volt lights.

There are options on adding 12 volt fans, and 12 volt appliances. If needed I would add extra auxillary 12 volt transformer to power the heaver amperage fixtures …. etc…

I’m thinking this setup would pay for it self with a short time once in use.

what do you think?
“Hope this helps explain why 12 vdc systems are not economic or practical on a residential basis.” please elaborate on this answer.
This will be for walkway lighting, nice and low lumens. This will be for areas that just need a little lighting.
I guess I should of added that my house will be wired for 120 volts thru out the home and outside of home. For the better lighting and lumens.

The 12 volts would be for general and walk area lighting.

Answer by Jim W
It is not practical application if you are on a PUD power grid. The cost of the wire and the replacement cost of the fixtures is prohibitive when compared to 120 vac. The amount of power that your solar grid would need to generate is way larger than the amount that is required from the power grid.
Hope this helps explain why 12 vdc systems are not economic or practical on a residential basis.

What can this kind of wire be used for?

May 13th, 2012 · Landscape Lighting

Question by grumpyoldlady: What can this kind of wire be used for?
We have a chance to get an incredible deal on 1000′ of 14/2 AWG SOOW wire. What I’ve see online indicates this a wire used for portable power sources such as on a construction site. Says 600 watt. Can this be used to wire household or workshop circuits? How about underground for landscape lighting etc?

Best answer:

Answer by c_kayak_fun
No, flexible portable cable like that can only be used for cord connections for tools or for drops from a ceiling box in a commercial installation with an approved stress-relief connector at the overhead box. It is not approved for and is a code violation to use it for any household wiring circuit installations or concealed as a permanent installation in any building at all. And it is completely not waterproof and would be totally unsafe (as well as illegal) to install underground.

Sorry. It’s not a “deal” if you can’t use it too many places. The regulations on residential wiring are very strict.

how to wire a timer to a landscape light?

May 10th, 2012 · Landscape Lighting

3195995227 93cbff1649 m how to wire a timer to a landscape light?
by James Jordan

Question by Juan D: how to wire a timer to a landscape light?

Best answer:

Answer by Jim W
It depends on the type of timer, in general, black goes to the line, red to the load, the ground to the ground and the white to the neutral if it is used. Some timers do not use the neutral, others are multi day timers that require the line and the neutral to be connected to the terminals for the line side, and the load wires to the load side terminals. This type will have a programmable timer in a grey metal box, that can be set for up to 7 days repeatable program. The timer must have the correct input voltage to work. If in doubt, call a qualified professional electrician to do the work.
